New range from Volvo

Volvo has unveiled its new truck range for Europe with improvements of the driver environment, a new engine and a number of new active safety systems.

“As much as 90 percent of all road accidents are related to the human factor. Our new system, Driver Alert Support, helps the driver understand when it is time to take a break,” says Volvo Trucks President and CEO Staffan Jufors.

The range consists of a new generation of the Volvo FH, FH16 and FM trucks, and will be rolled out in Europe during late summer. In addition to Driver Alert Support, several support systems are being launched that help the driver to avoid an accident to occur.

In addition, there is a new 11-litre engine, the new D11 is aimed to be used for efficient, weight sensitive transport operations. The D11 has two power versions, 390 and 430 hp. The new automated transmission for the Volvo FL distribution truck, I-sync has also been formally launched.

Driver Alert Support monitors and alerts tired drivers. Volvo is the first truck maker in Europe to introduce this system. Using a camera, the system monitors how the vehicle is being driven by constantly relating to the road markings. If the vehicle’s progress is perceived as erratic, the driver is alerted via an audible signal and a text message. If the pattern of progress is not changed, the driver is alerted to stop and take a break.

ESP is a system that prevents the risk of roll-over accidents when hauling a trailer. This facility has so far only been available on prime moversrs. Volvo is the first truck maker in the world to offer this system on rigids in 6×2 configuration. ESP is now also available on prime movers with multiple trailers.

Lane Changing Support uses a radar sensor to alert the driver of vehicles in the blind spot on the passenger side.

Cornering lights automatically illuminate the road edge when turning at low speed. They are activated together with the turn indicators and help the driver to see pedestrians and cyclists when driving in urban environments.
