Fuel Tax Credits eligibility tool

The ATO has developed a fuel tax credits eligibility tool to help potential clients assess their eligibility for fuel tax credits.

The fuel tax credit eligibility tool allows customers to:

  • access information on eligible activities and the relevant rates for fuel tax credits,
  • assess their eligibility for fuel tax credits, and
  • print out their responses & their eligibility assessment.

The ATO developed the eligibility tool to reduce the risk of clients incorrectly assessing their eligible activities and rates, which will ultimately help claim their fuel tax credits correctly.

The fuel tax credits scheme was extended 1 July 2008 to cover a whole range of additional business activities, such as construction, wholesale, retail, and landscaping.

Trucking companies are already entitled to claim a fuel tax credit of 18.51 cents per litre on the fuel they use in heavy vehicles on a public road, provided they meet one of four environmental criteria. In addition, it is already possible to claim for activities such as agriculture, forestry, fishing, mining, marine and rail transport, and electricity generation.

For more information on the extension of the fuel tax credits scheme and the eligibility tool, contact the ATO on 13 2866 or go to the ATO Website
