Road construction is a time sensitive business and Boral Asphalt in Brisbane relies heavily on a high level of efficiency in the transport of product from its haulage company Speedie Contractors.

The company keeps pace with technology gains and the lightweight Hamelex White live floor trailers are delivering a 27-tonne payload of asphalt with mass management, as well as returning faster delivery times.

“The trailers give us more payload, reducing the number of trucks required on each job, actually eliminating a truck movement on most jobs undertaken,” says Speedie Contractors Director Tim Knowles.

“We deliver asphalt and aggregate and the trailers give an even flow on discharge, which increases productivity on every job and aids the crews on each job site.”

Speedie Contractors is the prime carrier for Boral Asphalt in Brisbane and according to Boral’s Transport and Logistics Manager, Joe Schoessow, the company is impressed with the performance of the Hamelex White live floor units.

“We like what we see and the trailers are highly efficient in a host of applications for our company. In recent times we have leaned more towards eight wheelers, but this is the next step in the product delivery process,” Joe says.

“Trailers are getting bigger and better and the Hamelex White units are delivering better payloads coupled with a high level of efficiency, particularly where weight is an issue. Turnaround times are excellent, which is a plus for us, again increasing efficiency and productivity.

“Technology is going ahead in leaps and bounds and as we are constantly seeking improvements across the board the trailers are definitely on the right track for our business. Efficiency is such that the trailers provide increased service levels, contributing to speedy delivery on full consignment loads.”

The trailers are fitted with a steerable rear axle to eliminate scrubbing in tight access areas and according to Simon Knowles, brother of Tim, low maintenance and easy cleaning are just some of the benefits for Speedie Contractors.

“One aspect of the trailers is that the risk of rollover at job sites has been eliminated, taken out of the equation, and the concept is ideally suited to the delivery application with easy unloading in line with site crew requirements and a high level of manoeuvrability in the tightest areas,” Simon says, adding that with the impressive build of the Hamelex White trailers Speedie Contractors is looking at a minimum of 10 years service life before replacement of moving parts.

“What does stand out is the trailers are very structurally sound and that is vital in our business, as reliability and dependability is what we have based our business on. We anticipate a long and trouble-free life and to date that has been the case.”

Speedie Contractors has been in business for 47 years, starting with just two tippers, and is highly experienced in the transport requirements for Boral Asphalt across its operations. With growth experienced year by year the company continues to service the needs of one of Australia’s most experienced and respected names in the road construction business.

Hamelex White live floor trailers are meeting the stringent equipment demands of the company and are providing higher payload and both time and cost savings in what is a demanding role, coupled with more than a high level of acceptance from both drivers and crews on sites serviced by the company.
